In 1990, comics creator Scott McCloud issued a challenge: One fully finished 24-page comic, made in 24 continuous hours. Breaks were allowed, but the clock kept ticking. Since then, people have gathered annually to take on this challenge.
Frankly, as a busy comic artist, I don't have time for that! Plus, I like to work and sleep a healthy amount. So instead, I'm levying this challenge: One 10-page comic in 10 hours.
We'll gather together as comics creators and enthusiast, to have some company as we each create our comics. No prior comics experience required, just bring your curiosity and creativity!
When: Saturday October 4th, 2025 - 8:30am to 7pm
Where: University of Washington - Tacoma
Tacoma Paper & Stationery Building, Room 301
1735 Jefferson Ave, Tacoma, WA 98402
Cost: Free!
Want to learn more? Through September, I'll be sending out emails detailing logistics (when to show up, where to park, where to eat, etc.), what supplies to consider bringing, and comics production tips if you're new to making comics.
The event's email list is here, and strictly for the event. You'll get no surprise advertising:
Abrian Curington, visual storyteller and cartographer, telling stories with pictures professionally since 2007. Serious tea drinker. Kind of a silly.
Riki Thompson, UWT Associate Professor of Writing Studies & Digital Rhetoric. Researcher, creator, and teacher of stories, comics, digital & visual stuff. Brownie enthusiast. Totally a nerd.
This event is hosted in partnership with the University of Washington Tacoma’s Writing Studies program as part of Writing Through Comics (TWRT 333), a course that explores comics as both art and scholarship. Students learn theory and craft, create original comics, and use storytelling as a lens for critical reflection.
10 Hour Comics Day partners with UWT's goals, inviting anyone who would like to join the event to connect, and create through comics.
